Streaming Media Recommendations

   System Requirements
Ensure that your system meets these basic requirements:
  • Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, ME, 2000, or XP (98 or 2000 and above recommended)
  • Internet Explorer 4.0 and above or Netscape 4.06 - 4.7x
  • Recommended Internet Explorer 5.5 and above or Netscape Communicator 4.7x
  • Windows Media Player 6.4 or higher; Real Player G2 or 7 and higher
  • RealPlayer™ plug-in or Windows Media Player™ plug-in
  • Pentium 166 or better with at least 64 MB of RAM
  • At least 10MB of free disk space on your C: drive
  • A working sound card with current audio drivers
  • Speakers or headphones
  • Internet connection speed: 56Kbps and above for HTML slideshow recordings. PlaceWare Replay uses high performance streaming media and requires a network connection, cable modem, DSL, or dual ISDN to view.

For best performance, we recommend Windows 98 or 2000 and above with Internet Explorer 5.5 and above plus the Windows Media Player 7.x.

Important note: Microsoft has recommended that all users upgrade to at least IE 5.5 Service Pack 2 for best security.

  Basic Troubleshooting

  • Please double-check that you meet the System Requirements
  • Reboot your PC to clear system resources
  • Close all other applications except your Web browser
  • Ensure you have the most recent version of the Player

   Known and Important Issues

Web Browser Requirements

For trouble-free viewing we recommend using IE 5.5 or above or Netscape 4.7x

Note: If you download and install an upgrade version of your browser, you may be required to re-install your Windows Media Player.

- The latest Internet Explorer is available from Microsoft
- The latest Netscape Communicator is available from Netscape

Player Appears Disabled (All buttons greyed out)

There is a problem with some Windows machines where the player appears disabled... all the buttons are greyed out. This is because the Windows Media Player defaults to the wrong proxy settings. Follow these instructions to rectify this.

  1. Open your Windows Media Player (Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment or MultiMedia > Windows Media Player)
  2. Go to the View > Options Menu.
  3. Select the Advanced Tab
  4. Select Streaming Media (Windows Media)
  5. Under Protocols > HTTP select "No Proxy"
  6. Select Apply and OK. Close your Windows Media Player

   Installation Issues
  • Documentation for the installation of the Windows Media Player is available from Microsoft. Please refer to their installation guide for more information.
  • On Windows NT, the installer will not allow installation of WMP 7.x. Microsoft has not provided a newer version of their media player for NT. You will be forced to use their older 6.4 player if you are using NT. You will need to be logged in as a PowerUser or Administrator for NT (or W2000) to successfully install the Windows Media Player.
  • On Windows 2000, you will need to be logged in as a PowerUser or Administrator to successfully install the Windows Media Player.

Windows Media Player Configuration and Operation

Where is my Windows Media Player Application?
When Windows Media Player is installed on your computer it will create an icon on your desktop that you can use to launch the player in standalone mode. You can also find the Windows Media Player in your Start Menu under Accessories > Entertainment (Win95/98) or Accessories > Multimedia (NT)

Why isn't my Windows Media Player launched when I view the presentation?
PlaceWare takes advantage of a feature of the Windows Media Player that allows it to work within your browser. This provides a richer and simpler end-user experience.

Why does it take so long for content to start playing?
Due to congestion on the Internet, Windows Media Players are set to buffer before playback starts. This reduces interruptions and rebuffering caused by heavy network congestion. In some cases, you can adjust this setting in your Windows Media Player by opening your player (see above) and then going to View > Options > Advanced > Streaming Media (Windows Media) > Change.

I'm having trouble playing the presentation...
Check the basic troubleshooting guide first. If you can hear the test clip and the steps in the troubleshooting guide do not resolve the problem then the presentation is temporarily unavailable due to network or server congestion - try again after several minutes. If you still cannot access the recording, contact support@placeware.com.

I can't hear/view the presentation...
Important: Check the basic troubleshooting guide first - when in doubt - reboot and try again. If you can't even hear the test clip, then check the following:

  • Do you connect to the Internet through a firewall? Please contact your network administrator to determine what is required for you to recieve streaming media over the internet.
  • There may be network or server congestion - try again in several minutes.
  • Is some other software interfering with your Windows Media Player? (be sure to close all other applications including virus scanners and other applications that run in your system tray).
  • If you haven't recently done so, reinstall the Windows Media Player.
  • Check your sound card and speakers - are they working? Do you have the latest drivers?

What do I do if my Windows Media Player prompts me to upgrade?
The Windows Media Player is designed to automatically check for upgrades. You should feel free to upgrade your player whenever it prompts you. Upgrading your player should not create any problems. Alternatively, you can turn this feature off when it prompts you and it will not continue to check for an upgrade. The best performance is available with Windows Media Player 7.x and above plus Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP.

Why do I only see the presentation and not the random access slide list?
If you are using an 800 x 600 display resolution, you will need to click on the text area on the left hand side of the player to use the random access slide list.

What connection speed do I need to be on to view PlaceWare Replay?
PlaceWare Replay uses high performance streaming
media and requires a network connection, cable modem, DSL, or dual ISDN to view. Our other formats can be viewed with a 56Kbps modem.

What if I use AOL, do I have to do anything special?
For best performance, you will need to use one of the recommended browsers to view the recordings. Check the AOL site for more information on using streaming media with AOL.
